  • Length: 3:11
    = 184
as performed by the Benny Goodman Orchestra
    Instrumentation: Big Band
    Level: 4
Notes: This standard Swing Era anthem shows off the reason why Benny Goodman hired Fletcher Henderson to turn his band's sound upside down, ushering in a new era of popular music. Solo space for several instruments, lots of tight ensemble work, and a roaring finish at the perfect dancing tempo makes this a quintessential piece in any big band's library! CAATT.

as performed by the Benny Goodman Orchestra
    Instrumentation: Big Band
    Level: 3
Notes: Bugle Call Rag is an all out flag waver and was a major hit for Benny Goodman. Lots of solo space over this burning boogie-woogie/swing hybrid that has simple chords and riffs but swings hard. CAATT.

  • Swingin' on the Campus
    Length: 2:37
    = 195
    as performed by Johnny Hodges
    Instrumentation: Ellington 7-pc
    Level: 2
Notes: In Swingin' on the Campus you are either playing a killin' riff for the head or you are soloing! This is a very simply constructed piece that only is a level 2 because of the relatively uptempo speed. Solo changes are variations on rhythm changes.
    Solos: Alto, Tpt
    Composer: Duke Ellington, Johnny Hodges

  • Length: 2:58
    = 185
as performed by the Benny Goodman Orchestra
    Instrumentation: Big Band
    Level: 4
Notes: This wild piece starts out with a quoting of Mendelssohn's "Wedding March," but after two bars it's off to the races with tons of intricate riffs, solos, and a rowdy shout chorus at the end. Watch out for the lightening quick mute changing, which was standard practice in the 1930s. This piece makes a great wedding reception opener and many working bands using it now will open up the first solo section as a vamp to introduce a wedding party. CAATT.

  • The Back Room Romp (A Contrapuntal Stomp)
    Length: 2:44
    = 154
as performed by Rex Stewart and His 52nd Street Stompers
    Instrumentation: Ellington 7-pc
    Level: 3
Notes: Back Room Romp is basically a simple blues in Ab, but there is a twist: the head is a series of building independent lines, thus a "Contrapuntal Stomp." Every horn player gets a chorus. The lead trumpet part is a bit of a blow, but this was written for longtime Ellington sideman, trumpeter Rex Stewart. Another level 3 factor: the alto often hits high written Eb.
    Solos: Alto, Trumpet, Bari, Bone
    Composer: Duke Ellington
    Arranger: Duke Ellington
    Year: 1937
    Arrangement Year: 1937
    Style: Swing

  • Length: 3:06
    = 160
as performed by the Jimmie Lunceford Orchestra
    Instrumentation: Big Band
    Level: 5
Notes: This is a killer arrangement of an old Scottish song that is full of meat and potato ensemble work. Beware the aggressive brass solos though: Lead trumpet plays up to a high F by the end, but you'll need another trumpet soloist to pull off the Paul Webster fireworks and a lead trombonist to blast his way up to a HIGH F.
    Solos: Tenor2, Bone1, Tpt2
