  • Rendezvous with Rhythm
    Length: 2:58
    = 194
    as performed by Johnny Hodges
    Instrumentation: Ellington 7-pc
    Level: 3
Notes: Simple riffs and a shout chorus drive this deceptively swinging chart along. Plenty of space for solos. Note that this is fairly easy for a level 3, but some startlingly high trombone notes (E5!) keep it from being a 2.

  • Who Struck John?
    Length: 2:45
    = 160
    as performed by Johnny Hodges
    Instrumentation: Ellington 7-pc
    Level: 1
Notes: Also known as "Non-Violent Integration", Who Struck John? is a very simple but very cool head tune, good for jamming on a straight-ahead D major blues. This tune is unusual in it's use of parallel 5th in the rhythm section, otherwise known in modern times as barre chords. There is solo space for nearly everyone on this one so have fun with it.

  • Length: 2:58
    = 185
as performed by the Benny Goodman Orchestra
    Instrumentation: Big Band
    Level: 4
Notes: This wild piece starts out with a quoting of Mendelssohn's "Wedding March," but after two bars it's off to the races with tons of intricate riffs, solos, and a rowdy shout chorus at the end. Watch out for the lightening quick mute changing, which was standard practice in the 1930s. This piece makes a great wedding reception opener and many working bands using it now will open up the first solo section as a vamp to introduce a wedding party. CAATT.

    Composer: Harold Arlen, Ted Koehler
    Arranger: Fletcher Henderson

  • Length: 3:01
    = 235
as performed by the Benny Goodman Orchestra
    Instrumentation: Big Band
    Level: 3
Notes: Bugle Call Rag is an all out flag waver and was a major hit for Benny Goodman. Lots of solo space over this burning boogie-woogie/swing hybrid that has simple chords and riffs but swings hard. CAATT.
    Solos: Tpt3, Clarinet, Bone2, Tenor2
Composer: Jack Pettis, Billy Meyers, Elmer Schoebel

  • Length: 2:42
    = 205
as performed by the Artie Shaw Orchestra
    Instrumentation: Big Band
    Level: 3
Notes: Diga Diga Doo was a heavily covered tune in the 1920s and '30s, but Artie Shaw's version was one of the tightest. A hard swinging and nimble riff vehicle that has some room for solos as well, Diga is a great upbeat piece that isn't too tricky and has lots of fun moments! CAATT.
    Solos: Clarinet, Tenor1, Bone2
Composer: James Frances McHugh (Dorothy Fields lyrics omitted)
    Arranger: Jerry Gray
    Year: 1928
    Arrangement Year: 1938

  • Length: 3:11
    = 184
as performed by the Benny Goodman Orchestra
    Instrumentation: Big Band
    Level: 4
Notes: This standard Swing Era anthem shows off the reason why Benny Goodman hired Fletcher Henderson to turn his band's sound upside down, ushering in a new era of popular music. Solo space for several instruments, lots of tight ensemble work, and a roaring finish at the perfect dancing tempo makes this a quintessential piece in any big band's library! CAATT.
