    Instrumentation: Big Band

Notes: This easy-going sax section feature has great lines and gives a ton of space for a tenor player to navigate some colorful changes. This is a great link tune between early cool writing (Birth of the Cool) and the more hard-hitting west coast writing that Bill Holman would popularize.

Notes: A huge fanfare-ish intro announces this amazing Tiny Kahn tune, and you are quickly off to the races. Unison sax and brass lines at a breakneck tempo fill the head, while the meat of the arrangement features big bebop statements, sax solos, and an old-fashioned trombone chase (an early teaming of JJ Johnson and Kai Winding).

as performed by the Chubby Jackson Big Band
    Instrumentation: Big Band
    Level: 4
Notes: This Tiny Kahn chart is very consistent throughout with great lines and moving harmony. Plenty of solo space around the band, some killin' trumpet lines, and brief bursts of shout chorus pieces that build up past the final head out. Tough on the lead trumpet but worth the challenge.

  • Length: 3:24
    = 162
as performed by the Chubby Jackson Big Band
    Instrumentation: Big Band
    Level: 4
Notes: The only thing making this a level 4 and not 2 or 3 is the endurance necessary for lead trumpet. The riffs and melodies are catchy and swinging and generally in easier ranges in an easy key. If your lead player can handle the relentless shout chorus this is a great piece for getting into the bebop era and can be worked up relatively quickly. Lot's of solo space around the band.

  • Length: 3:27

    Instrumentation: Big Band
    Level: 2
Notes: The lone Gerry Mulligan contribution from this recording session has a small group vibe to it and never employs the use of a shout chorus, instead relying on soloists to drive the song foward. A relaxing bebop arrangement of an overlooked beautiful standard, the high C for lead trumpet only comes on the final chord. And of course, Mulligan features himself heavily, making this a great little solo vehicle for your bari player.

Notes: This is the toughest chart in the Chubby Jackson group. There are necessary high Gs in lead trumpet, a never-ending shout chorus, and a strangely-phrased blues head. It's completely doable though, so if you are looking for a bit of a challenge, and you have a lead player hungry for some red meat, check out this ambitious Al Cohn piece.
